Train up a Child

biscuit making baby

I had my little granddaughter this weekend. Her big sister and big brother had ballgames, so Stella opted to stay with me and Papa. She arrived early Saturday morning and we all got ready and hit  the yard sales. It was fun watching her look for treasures. She had her own money and carefully counted it out,  making decisions on how much she needed to spend and was “it really worth this much?” I told her mom, I’m raising us a little picker.

She came home with several ceramic trinkets including a cat, dog, swan, quail, and the ‘find of the day’ a Vera Bradley purse for $4.00. Just her size and color! I showed her how to always check the insides to be sure it’s clean and we did. It looked new, actually. She was thrilled. And she had $5.00 left over!

The ball game lasted late and after all the yard sales, she was tired,  so she spent the night .  This morning I had her helping me cook lunch. Her job was making biscuits.

She took her assignment very seriously. And it is amazing,  but young children really want to do good, so they pay attention! She cut the shortening into the flour. I showed her how to make a ‘well’ for the liquid and she added the buttermilk and mixed. Then we turned it out onto a very heavily floured surface and worked a little flour around the edges. Patted more on the top and we were ready to cut them out.

We had a cup of flour to dip the cutter into between biscuits…she love -love -loved getting her hands in all of this. I loved watching her.

We’ re going to have to work on cutting them a little closer together…but I used this opportunity to teach her how to shape the remaining dough into biscuits with her hands…which is the way I usually make them.

And everyone exclaimed how wonderful her biscuits were at dinner today! Her mom took the leftovers home for their breakfast in the morning! I foresee my granddaughters cooking for me in my old age, so I’m training them now. 🙂 And I love homemade biscuits!  She’s only 6. I think by the time she’s 8 I’ll be turning the kitchen over to her. WHAT A FUN DAY!

What a great memory you’ve made! My youngest daughter used to sit at my Dad’s side to watch him create our meals and help too. She started helping him when she was 4 years old! At 25, she is now a wonderful cook. My grandson and I have made mosaics together and always have so much fun! Visiting from the Ultimate Blog Challenge.

All my babies have stood on the same stool and cooked with me since they were 2! We begin with pouring oatmeal into the bowl and water for Papa’s breakfast. Then proceed to scrambling eggs. Making memories is the best part. thanks for the comment!
