Thyroid Issues

thyroid tired2

Ok, I’ll admit it right off the bat, I have issues….really. As anyone with thyroid problems can tell you…Issues is our middle name.  I have a feeling that there are lots of people, mainly females, with thyroid issues and they don’t even know it. Why? Because most doctors don’t study the thyroid. As one told me, “I studied what I had to know to pass the medical examine and that’s all I know.” Great. So what happens when you discover, as I did,  that there is a tumor growing on your thyroid gland? Well, there’s a whole list of things you have to do.  Tests, tests, and more tests. I think they just run them for the sake of your feelings because once they get the results, no one seems to know what to do with them!  I’m not kidding. It’s really sad.

HOW I DISCOVERED I HAD A THYROID ISSUE

Let me tell you about me. I painted the backdrop for our local Nutcracker production.. In doing so,  I hurt, actually fractured,  my vertebra and have known for several years I would have to have this repaired. But my husband wanted me to wait.  I did and almost two years ago, I could not stand it any more and needed to have my neck fixed. I had to have an MRI and that’s when they discovered this growth on my thyroid. I called it a tumor,  but truthfully,  no one can tell me exactly what it is!  All they will say is it’s the size of a walnut.  People,  this is a serious breach in the medical profession. Women are suffering and nobody is paying attention.

out of order

When the results came back I did a little research before my husband came home and found that most tumors are not cancer and if it is they remove it and very rarely does it spread.  All of this is good news, right?  Well, sorta. My husband’s first wife died with cancer, so it was wonderful news to him.  The bad news is that the quality of life takes a turn downhill. It’s a major undertaking to get back on the path of feeling normal again. It has been 16 months since I discovered the tumor and I still have not figured out the medication that I need to feel better. Many people suffer for years and years without any relief…I will tell you more of why this is so on another post. It’s complicated.

MY SYMPTOMS

Prior to finding out that I had an issue, I felt tired all the time. I thought it was because we stayed up too late at night. And I had no energy to do anything, so I did very little, just enough to keep my house reasonably straight.  I cooked less which means we ate out more ~ which I attributed to my weight gain. I had a reason for everything I was going through. I could explain it away.  I gave out of breath easily and couldn’t take deep breaths at all. It was like I couldn’t fill my lungs up with air. I didn’t have the energy to take care of my infant grandson,  which should have been a red flag! Nothing could keep me from taking care of my babies. I hate for a baby to have to go to daycare and I normally kept them for a few months. I did keep Joe,  but I felt bad the whole time. It was not the pleasure it should have been.

so tired

I had had our Pumpkin Patch Party the year before and I absolutely collapsed as soon as it was over. I couldn’t move,  I was so exhausted. None of this was the norm for me. I have always been hyper-active and a go-getter and here I was collapsing after a party… And other people brought the food! I usually cooked for everyone! I had no idea what was happening to me and to make matters worse, I blamed it on getting older. I thought I had given up on life and no one noticed. I was depressed and felt all alone. I didn’t like to  go out or be around people. I have tears in my eyes writing this. I had no idea.

OVER 50% of AUTOPSIES REVEAL THYROID GROWTHS!

When my husband came home and I told him about the tumor he did his own research and came into the den to talk to me.  He had just read that over half the people who are autopsied are found to have thyroid tumors!  This is incredible. He actually thinks I’m going to get some sort of comfort from these words……..really? I said “Am I the only one who gets this??????? All of these people have one thing in common…THEY ARE DEAD! There’s an epidemic going on and no one is paying any attention!  Women are suffering and dying because of their thyroids! ”  Of course,  I was laughing and I reported this to my doctor when he called…the whole thing is so ludicrous that it’s funny ~ in a tragic sort of way.

thyroid gland

The thyroid gland sits right below your adams apple. It’s a butterfly shaped gland that is part of your endocrine system. Simply stated,  regulates your metabolism and ensures that all of your organs get the oxygen and whatever else they need to be healthy. If your thyroid gland fails to do this then you are open to having a whole range of “issues” from heart problems to breast cancer.

YOUR THYROID AND BREAST CANCER

I dare say that many women who suffer from breast cancer started out with a thyroid ISSUE that was overlooked or ignored. The Breast Cancer Society would do well to jump on the band wagon of Thyroid Issues, because the thyroid is the root problem, I believe. It’s a very very important gland that we need to keep healthy.

Well, I am going to stop here for now…but I will leave you with symptoms that may indicate you have a thyroid ISSUE! .  It’s a check list everyone needs to be familiar with, because most doctors aren’t.

I will continue this saga on another post. Thanks for reading…. Do you suffer with any of these symptoms?  Your thyroid could be the problem. I’ll be back soon with more of my journey.
